Transferring from LWTech

Start at LWTech

Lake Washington Institute of Technology is proud of the many pathway options our students have to complete an Applied Bachelor’s degree, both at LWTech, and at in-state universities and colleges. All degrees, whether DTA/MRP, AAS-T or AAS, can fulfill transfer requirements at multiple institutions thanks to the articulation (transfer) agreements between LWTech and the transfer college.

An applied bachelor's degree can improve your chances in the job market and help you make more money. Employers want graduates with:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Complex problem-solving skills
  • Applied knowledge in real-world settings
  • A broad (rather than narrow) education

American Association of Colleges & Universities (2013) "Report of Findings."

How to Transfer

Start thinking about where you will transfer and what major you will pursue.

Resources
  • Learn about bachelor’s programs related to your program or explore transfer options available to all LWTech AAS and AAS-T graduates.
  • Use college search engines such as CollegeView or CollegeSource Online, to find schools that offer your major. You can also search programs on the Washington State Career Bridge website.
  • Attend transfer events on campus. Check out the Calendar for upcoming campus Transfer Fairs.
  • Contact colleges and universities. Visit their campuses, meet with advisors and ask to sit in on classes.
  • Find out application requirements and deadlines, including:
    • Required GPA
    • Foreign language courses
    • When the college accepts students into your chosen major
    • Will you be able to apply as a transfer student? If you must meet freshman admission requirements, you may need to submit your high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores.
  • Learn about prerequisites for your major and ask if there are equivalent courses you can take at LWTech.
  • Make a plan to complete your courses at LWTech. Meet with your faculty advisor and an advisor in the West Building, W207 to determine classes that will assist you in transferring.
  • Prepare yourself academically. Take challenging classes that include significant amounts of reading and writing.
  • Start collecting materials you may need for your application(s). These may include:
    • Transcripts from previous colleges
    • High school transcript
    • Letters of recommendation (give authors at least 3 weeks notice)
  • Turn in the Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible before you plan to transfer. Complete any other application materials for financial aid at your chosen college, making sure you meet any deadlines.
  • Look for scholarships a year to six months before you plan to transfer.

Resources

    • LWTech’s Scholarship Directory
    • Find out about scholarships offered by the college you plan to attend, including application processes and deadlines.

Application

Review your college's application steps. Read all directions and make sure you have all required materials to apply. Get separate application materials for your major if needed.

Application Essay/Personal Statement

Start working on your essay at least three (3) weeks ahead of the application deadline so you will have plenty of time to revise it.

Resources

Transcripts

Request official transcripts from Enrollment Services, West Building, W201 at least two weeks before the application deadline. Provide the address of the college(s) where your transcript should be sent.

Complete the Application

Complete the application on paper or online and submit it with all required documents before the deadline.

Pay the Application Fee

Most four-year colleges charge around $50 – 100 to apply. Ask the admissions office if you have questions about paying this fee.

For more details or any questions along the way, see an Advisor.

Transfer Institutions

Institutions that have articulation (transfer) agreements and accept transfer students from LWTech are listed below by LWTech school and program.

Please note that transferability of credits is always determined by the receiving institution, and that LWTech degrees may not always fulfill all needed prerequisites. For questions about transferring to a specific four-year program, start by seeing an Advisor.

Other Transfer Options

Transfer to a college or university program that do not have articulation agreements with LWTech (not listed above) IS possible, but needs careful planning and may require taking additional courses. Meeting with an advisor early on in your program will help you select courses suited for your transfer.

Without a clear transfer pathway, colleges and universities will evaluate your LWTech transcript course by course. Many institutions have course equivalency charts on their websites to help students see how courses transfer. Local colleges and universities with charts online include: Bastyr University, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, The Evergreen State College, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle University, University of Washington, Washington State University and Western Washington University.

If you are thinking of applying to transfer to the University of Washington, you may also find the My Plan transfer planner helpful.

Transferring out of state? Transferology.com keeps course equivalencies for many colleges across the country.

Washington 45 is a list of general education courses offered at both community and technical colleges as well as public four-year schools. LWTech offers many of these courses. Most four-year schools accept that these courses meet a year's worth of general education requirements toward a Bachelor’s degree. The largest number of credits that can transfer is 45.
