The Lake Washington Institute of Technology Education Paraeducator, AAS-T program will prepare students to work as paraeducators in educational settings from preschool to 12th grade/adult transition. Paraeducators fill numerous roles within school districts. The roles can include individual work with students, general classroom support, special education plan implementation, assist small groups of students with instructional lessons, monitor lunch hours and recess, and assist students with special needs. School districts may have different roles related to this work including instructional assistants, and behavior technicians. Students working in these roles can earn income and gain classroom experience on their way to teacher certification for classroom teachers. This degree is designed as part of a pathway for students who would like to continue on an educational pathway to complete a bachelor's program and teacher certification to be a classroom teacher.
The Education Paraeducator AAS-T degree aligns with the WA State Competencies for paraeducators and includes a comprehensive overview of education services and strategies to effectively work with learners of all abilities while fostering positive, safe, and inclusive learning environments. The engaging curriculum will be offered in a hybrid format with practicum component with application of course content in school district settings. The program provides students with the training to excel in demonstrating the high standards necessary to be an effective paraeducator in schools by focusing on professionalism, collaboration skills, ethics, equity, diversity, inclusion, and current trends.
Entry into the Education Paraeducator program requires completion of LWTech's general online application.
