Fitness Specialist Personal Trainer

The Fitness Specialist/Personal Trainer program at Lake Washington Institute of Technology prepares students for successful employment as group fitness instructors or personal trainers in entry-level to mid-management positions. Fitness professionals train and motivate others to improve and maintain their overall health, fitness and wellness. 

The fast-paced curriculum prepares students to pass personal trainer certification exams offered by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).  Students must complete a 208-hour industry-based internship or cooperative work experience to earn their certificate. 

Personal Trainer Students

  • Learn exercise science, anatomy and physiology.
  • Practice techniques and hands-on training in LWTech's state-of-the-art fitness center and exercise studio.
  • Experience using specialized equipment in the LWTech gym.
  • Discover the latest trends in the fitness industry.
  • Enjoy small class sizes and classroom instruction led by industry experts.
  • Understand nutrition aspects for sports, weight loss and healthy lifestyles.
  • Obtain skills in strength training, fitness testing and evaluation, risk management and professional conduct.

Group Fitness Instructor (GFI) Students

  • Learn practical teaching skills and theory, including anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology.
  • Understand choreography techniques, cueing and effective class format planning.
  • Explore the fundamentals of resistance training, stretching, injury prevention and exercise safety guidelines.
  • Obtain and practice the necessary skills to teach a variety of safe and effective group exercise classes. 
  • Gain the necessary knowledge to take a national group exercise instructor certification exam.

Career Opportunities

When you complete LWTech's Fitness Specialist/Personal Trainer degree program, you will have the knowledge you need to open doors to many types of entry-level to mid-management career opportunities. Fitness Specialists/Personal Trainers may find jobs in health and fitness clubs, athletic clubs, boutique studios, strength training gyms, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness centers and recreation organizations such as the YMCA.

Gainful Employment

Regulations published in the Federal Register on October 29, 2010 require institutions to report aggregated information for students who enrolled in Title IV eligible educational programs that lead to gainful employment in a recognized occupation (GE programs).
