Job Description

We work on a variety of residential landscapes from small yards to larger acreage. Some work will be installing landscapes from the ground up while most days will be maintenance.  We perform fine gardening but also do a lot of grunt maintenance. General Position Summary

The Garden and Grounds Supervisor sets the standards for skilled gardening work such as planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning, and general care of plant materials and landscaped areas. This position performs skilled horticulture practices and landscaping activities such as IPM and other plant and soil health initiatives. This supervisor is responsible for effective planning, organizing, and supervising of the garden, grounds, and custodial team to ensure the entire exhibition, including internal and perimeter grounds, achieve and maintain the established standards for cleanliness, presentation, and overall guest experience.  This position directs the daily functions of the garden and grounds team, including scheduling and payroll.  Additionally, this position seeks opportunities to enhance the visitor experience.

Essential Functions

Work requires knowledge of standard methods, materials, procedures, tools, and equipment associated with landscaping, gardening, and custodial work. Persons allocated to this position use judgment in interpreting various conditions and applying guidelines and choosing the proper method to complete the work.

  • Transplants, prunes, and maintains a variety of plant materials including trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and seasonal plantings. Prepares, plants, and maintains planting beds.
  • Creates and implements IPM focusing strongly on organic and sustainable practices and materials.
  • Monitors and maintains irrigation systems.
  • Effectively supervise and oversee all operations of the garden, grounds, and housekeeping team.
  • Oversee lead(s) and frontline team member to ensure that work is assigned appropriately, completed in a timely manner and that the quality of work performed achieves established standards .
  • Assist crews with daily tasks as needed.

  • Supervise seasonal and supplemental plantings in the garden.
  •  Work with Exhibitions department to lead tours, programs, and workshops.
  • Provide content to Marketing and PR as requested. Promote garden as directed by Marketing and/or Garden & Grounds Manager.
  • Provide input on all aspects of budgeting for the Finance department, including the development of the yearly budget and controlling expenses.
  • Plan, monitor and track departmental expenses and labor within budget parameters.
  • Maintain all interior and exterior cleanliness standards.
  • Ensure that all Chihuly Garden and Glass policies are adhered to within the garden, grounds, and custodial departments.
  • Maintain and schedule repairs to garden, grounds, and custodial equipment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key vendors to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget scope.
  • Consult with other agencies to determine viable ways to conserve resources, improve efficiencies.
  • Act as a liaison with all state, county and local officials with regard to permits and inspections, ensuring that the company is in compliance with all rules and regulations as they relate to the business.
  • Continually research and implement green initiatives to maximize efficiencies.

Horticulturist, GardeningGaGa—1/19/18  

Small, residential garden design/install/maintenance company, Gardening GaGa, needs an experienced horticulturalist. This could be a full or part time position. You must be familiar with a wide range of ornamental plants/shrubs/trees and be able to lift 50 pounds or more. You MUST be able to work independently or in a team. We do grunt work some days and fine gardening other days. Some of our gardens are small and ordinary, but some are estates that require confidentiality agreements. You need to be ok with it all. Everyone does all aspects of all the work we have. You need to be willing and able to go to ALL of our gardens (Seattle, North of Seattle and Eastside), we do have vehicles that are sometimes available for use, but it would be best if you had your own vehicle to take to job sites. I provide most tools (leaf-blowers, power-trimmers, etc.), but require that you provide your own hand tools.

This is a year around job for the right person. I can give you as many hour per week as you would like. I will ask for a trial run (paid) of working with us for a day before hiring, to make sure everyone gets along. We are a small company and need a team member who works well with us. Starting wage is $18/hr for a training period of up to 3 months depending on your experience and initiative—and then $20-$22 DOE thereafter. The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG) Internship Program is designed to provide practical hands-on experience in the following areas of interest: garden maintenance & renovation, propagation, nursery management, and retail nursery management.

Botanical Garden & Nursery Internship

One full-time position available in 2018 for up to 6 months –Beginning in early Spring 2018 (Feb. / Mar.) with possible opportunities for extension into the following spring.

Garden Management

Learn how to care for a world-class botanical garden, including proper pruning and planting techniques, landscape design, weed control, renovation, irrigation, and plant identification.

Nursery Management

Gain valuable experience in the operation and maintenance of a highly specialized nursery with emphasis on propagation techniques. Learn propagation methods including grafting, cuttings, seed sowing and hand pollination as well as greenhouse operation, transplanting, inventory control, data entry and plant identification. Detail oriented and mechanical ability or aptitude helpful.

The RSBG is a 22 acre garden featuring one of the largest collections of Rhododendron species in the world. At least 700 species are displayed in a natural woodland setting. Additional plant collections include ferns, maples, bamboo and alpines. Special features include the Rutherford Conservatory, Victorian Stumpery, the Alpine Garden, Pond Garden, Hardy Fern display garden and Meconopsis Meadow. The garden is located in Federal Way near I-5 and Highway 18. The garden is supported by the Rhododendron Species Foundation (RSF), an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the study, cultivation, display and distribution of Rhododendron species. The RSF is internationally recognized as a leader in Rhododendron conservation.

Part-Time Internship at Native Plant Nursery

Go Natives! Nursery is a small family-owned native plant nursery in Shoreline, WA that has a inventory of over 100 species of NW native plants. We are looking for a part-time intern with the potential to be an entry-level employee at the nursery. Ideally this person can be available for additional hours, but will be limited to 10 hours per week over the winter. Hours will be concurrent with the Nursery Manager’s schedule, usually one morning during the week and one on Saturday. This is an excellent opportunity to learn native plant ID and basic nursery tasks, as well as maintaining a landscape that is a permaculture and low-maintenance model.

Initial needs at the nursery are weeding plants, general cleanup, and site maintenance. Assisting with potting up and labeling plants, checking plants after inclement weather, and maintenance of hoops will be additional tasks as they arise. Work will be initially supervised by the owner, Don Norman or the nursery manager, Chelsie Martell. Initial hours will be around 10 hours a week, starting at $12/hr, with raises at 6 and 9 months.

There are many future projects at the nursery could be internships for school work. These include:

  • Completing a rainwater bog
  • Helping construct a new SW facing drought tolerant garden
  • Assessing plant potting mixes for new species at the garden
  • Improving the plantings on the grounds

Eshraghi Nursery is a grower of woody ornamentals, specializing in Japanese maples and grafted conifers.  We produce both container and field grown material on 300 acres in Hillsboro, Oregon.  We are now offering paid work experience during the Spring season or just for the summer, dates are flexible.   This is for students studying agriculture, horticulture or related fields.  Our college internship provides hands-on work experience in all aspects of nursery production.  Work will rotate through all aspects of the nursery: field work (staking and weeding), Shipping, Propagation and Sales (data entry). The Cloud Mountain Farm 8/31/17

The Cloud Mountain Farm Center Intern Education Program is a rigorous integrated educational curriculum and work-based learning program. This program gives interns a hands-on, farm-based, full-immersion experience in agricultural production and management as well as a solid understanding of the big picture challenges that affect NW agriculture and the communities it serves by putting interns alongside permanent staff on a daily basis. Interns see first-hand what it takes to keep farmlands healthy and agricultural businesses thriving.

The three program goals are:

  • Exposure— Field trips, readings and discussions will present a variety of agricultural models and challenges to provide a picture of various farming opportunities through:
    • circumstance of resources
    • land
    • market
    • community
    • history of farming
    • labor practices
    • farming theories and philosophies
  • Entrepreneurial Development—Interns will make connections between their interest in agriculture, and models and systems which might best fulfill their future goals through:  
    • business planning
    • marketing
    • value added products
    • product development
    • enterprise budgets
    • sales
  • Technical Development—Interns will come away with hard skills and the ability to evaluate economic opportunities. This will include production of perennial, annual, and nursery systems, with some exposure to livestock/integrated systems. Some of the areas of focus are:

Depending upon interests and experience interns may participate in a number of possible internship tracks offered through CMFC:

  • Onsite Internships: these interns can expect to work up to 32 hours a week
    • Food Production Internship
  • Interns working on-farm atCMFC get a well-rounded work experience in vegetables, orchards, vineyards, nursery production, and sales and customer service. 
    • Nursery Production Internship

Interns will gain experience primarily in plant propagation, field production, container production as well as customer service and sales, while still having the opportunity to work in orchards, vineyards, and vegetables when the season allows. 

Off-site Internships

Interns interested in focusing on other agricultural enterprises that CMFC does not have including livestock production, herb production, or CSA may be connected with one of our partner farms.  Further contact information will be given if this is requested.

For individuals interested only in the classroom and field curriculum part of the program. This would be 1 day a week for 8-9 hours of education. See Continuing Education Units Section for more information.

The intern program averages one day a week where all interns will participate in classroom education, hands-on workshops, and field trips to other farms in the region. The curriculum gives interns the opportunity to explore agriculture through exposure to:

  • diverse agricultural systems
  • business management
  • skill development
  • business planning
  • marketing
  • social and environmental stewardship
  • development of technical skills related to soil science, botany, ecological pest management and resource management

The CMFC internship program extends from mid-February through October. All interns will participate in a weekly education day, generally meeting at CMFC. All interns are expected to attend the weekly educational day. Preparation for the education day may include supplemental readings and additional planned exercises or relevant explorations into a subject.

In addition to the education day, onsite interns will spend up to 32 hours/week as production staff and perform farm and/or nursery duties as the season dictates.

Onsite interns – CMFC interns will be expected to follow all guidelines set forth in the employee personnel policy.  CMFC interns will be paid an hourly wage of $11.50 and will have the option to take up to 5 unpaid vacation days throughout the internship duration.

Off-site Interns –Those interns placed at partner farms will also work as part of a farm crew, with hours and duties established by the partner farm. Wages and living arrangements will be determined solely by the participant and the partner farm.
